Marrakech runs three different rides out of one city. Agafay is hard grey hammada forty minutes south where a machine can be opened up. The Palmeraie is palm shade and soft dirt on the edge of town. The real dunes are seven hours east at Merzouga, and most people never get there.
Agafay: quad, camel and a dinner show
Grey stone flats rather than sand, which is why the machines here get driven rather than crawled. The evening version finishes at a camp with drums, a grill and a fire, back in the medina by eleven.
One hour on a quad, twenty minutes on a camel
The pairing almost every Marrakech desk sells. The quad hour is the ride; the camel is a slow photograph at the end of it. Ask whether the camel leg is a loop or a walk to the tea tent.
Agadir and Taghazout: beach dunes, then sandboards
Softer sand than Agafay and an Atlantic wind that makes July survivable. Rides leave from the Taghazout side and finish on a dune you can slide down on a board.
The desert quad safari sells more seats than any other ride.
Dune bashing in a 4x4, then a machine of your own for twenty minutes to an hour, then a camp with a grill. Dubai wrote the format; Doha, Hurghada and Agafay all run their own version of it now. The variable worth checking is how long the quad leg actually lasts.

Lahbab red sand starts forty minutes out of the city. The standard evening runs dune bashing first, a quad or buggy of your own second, then a camp with a grill, henna and a fire under the floodlights. Doha and Abu Dhabi sell the same day on paler sand and smaller crowds.
Who is allowed to drive a quad, and what the dust does to the rest of you.
Most operators put the driver at 16 or 18 with a licence in hand, and anyone younger rides behind an adult or takes a two-seat buggy. Helmets and goggles come with the machine; closed shoes, sleeves and something over your face do not. Expect a damage deposit held on a card, and expect everything you brought to come back the colour of the ground.

Quad, buggy or side-by-side: the machine decides the day.
A quad is one seat and your own throttle, and you feel every rut through the bars. A buggy seats two behind a roll cage with a steering wheel, which is where most families end up. A rental with no guide out front is a different day again.
In the Yucatán the buggy ride ends in a cenote.
Riviera Maya operators bolt the whole morning together: jungle track on four wheels, a cable over the canopy, then a rope ladder down into cold fresh water in a limestone hole. Punta Cana runs the same trick with a flooded water cave and a finish on Macao beach.

What an hour on a quad actually costs.
Every ride on the site, grouped by what you pay for a seat. The cheap end is a short loop on a shared track; the top end is one machine per person for a full day.

Three quad rides that exist because the machine can get there.
A limestone sinkhole with no road to it, a cable strung between two jungle towers, a sea cave reached across bare rock. None of them are a walk, and no coach goes near them.
The cenote at the end of the track
The Riviera Maya sits on porous rock, and where a cave roof has fallen in there is cold fresh water below. Almost none of them have a road. The buggy hour is how you reach one, the ladder down is the part nobody photographs well, and the swim is what everybody remembers on the drive back.

Driving to a cave pool
